The Berger Hunting bullet line features VLD match grade bullets that have the highest possible ballistic coefficient designed for 300 yards or more. Berger recommends that the bullets be seated to touch the rifling for best accuracy. Note, however, that the resulting cartridge overall length may be too long for some magazines. The VLD design incorporates a sharp nose that allows the bullet to penetrate 2" to 3" before it starts to expand. After the initial expansion, the bullet will shed between 40% and 85% of its weight as shrapnel into the surrounding tissue (internal organs). The combination between the shrapnel and the hydrostatic shock produces a massive wound cavity within the vital area that will be 13" - 15" long. This is not loaded ammunition.

    The bad news: Bullet length cans very as much as .035' from lot to lot. The good news: If your construct an accurate Cartridge Over All Length with a bullet of median length from the lot, load it to whatever jam or jump you desire with a Redding VLD seating stem, then your ogive that contacts the lands won't vary more than + or - .001". I verified that by using a seating guide, made from the part of my barrel that was cut off before chambering. The cut off rifle barrel piece was then put in a chuck on the lathe and reamed with the same reamer used to cut out my chamber. No guessing here with an aftermarket comparator. Also, bullet weight never varied more than .1 of a grain.
